Michigan Spring Game

Michigan Football. One of the most storied programs, alma mater of the greatest of all time: Tom Brady, and the stomping grounds of the on and only Jim Harbaugh. After a great start to the season last year, they stumbled first against Ohio State and then to close out the season against FSU. The issue in my mind was unfortunately an underwhelming quarterback, who somehow was a Davey O'Brien semifinalist. He struggles with the deep balls and doesn't seem to stay cool when flushed out of the pocket, and this problem was palpable during the Orange Bowl with the inability to score from a 1st and goal on the 1-yd line. It's possible that part of the issue was an offensive line that hadn't quite gelled yet.

These problems were just as serious in the Michigan Spring game, though. For one, Speight again struggled when flushed out of the pocket, and his accuracy was severely affected when he was off balance. The inverse of this may be that the Michigan defense may be strong in the coming year.

The other major issue I foresee is difficulty with the deep ball. He can't blow open a game with a big play, because his accuracy is not particularly good. However, he is solid with the short rhythm passes, and the run game looks to be quite strong. These guys run power, and it's a thing of beauty!

Overall, I suspect they'll be pretty strong (9-3 or 8-4) and then go to a bowl game. There will no doubt be problems with Ohio State next year, but I haven't watch that spring game yet. More on that later...
